Intro

Andruino Project

Andruino is a very low-cost and effective solution for taking control of your home with an iOS device. Users with a basic knowledge of electronics and the Arduino will enjoy its ease of use  and versatility.

Why Andruino and not Arduino? What means Andruino?

What is the origin of the name Andruino? Andruino is based on Arduino hardware so I found natural to call my app after Arduino. Andruino is just a mock of Arduino based on my name, Andrea. You can read it as “An Arduino” system made by Andrea, myself. Just a funny way to acknowledge Arduino.

How does it work?

The Andruino eco-system is based on AndruinoApp and a number of Arduino compatible nodes (e.g. ArduinoMega, NodeMCU, ESP8266 or STM32 Nucleo boards).
You can take advantage of the wealth of sensors (e.g. humidity, temperature, power meters) and actuators (e.g. relay boards, PWM peripherals) widely available for the Arduino. Once the hardware is configured in the AndruinoApp, you can communicate with your IOT nodes checking their status and controlling them in realtime from any location!
AndruinoApp is the first App in which you can drag and drop the sensors and controls over a real map of your home. You can connect analog and digital sensors to nodes and the Andruino App communicates with them displaying realtime room temperatures, power consumption, humidity, opened doors, and any other information from your home. You can switch on and off relays, control PWM outputs, and create pulses.
You can also store the sensor data in a database and displaying it as a graph.

 

Which hardware configuration can be used?

The Andruino sketch can be installed on different hardware controllers such as the ArduinoMega, NodeMCU, ESP8266 and the new and power-full STM32 nucleo boards (STMicroelectronics). Each board can have one or more sensors or actuators and they will be visible in the AndruinoApp.
You can have many Arduino boards programmed with the same sketch and connected to internet allowing them all to be controlled at the same time by your iPhone/iPad/iWatch. Each board is configured with your username and with a unique board name.

 

Is it open source?

The Andruino eco-system is based on a proprietary App, the AndruinoApp, which was developed for iOS. The Arduino sketch is provided for download and you can add whatever modifications you wish. Anything related to the Arduino hardware is free and opensource.

You are only required to buy the Andruino app once. It is available in the AppStore for a few dollars/euros and there are no in-app purchases for additional functions.
Since the Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform, this project was designed to be flexible and serve as starting point for artists, designers, hobbyists or anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments in home automation.
